Lead Your Business By Saying the Right Words

Lead Your Business By Saying the Right Words

Some business owners might not be aware of just how much their speech can affect the people around them. Words can foster trust between two people, and have the power to end a relationship. Words can inspire people, but also put them down. You might not feel like you take certain people seriously, but psychological research proves otherwise.

As seen in the life of Helen Keller, the words you speak completely make up the world you live in. We all know Helen’s story; born deaf and blind, she described her world as empty prior to her discovery of language. “She didn’t say it was boring, lonely or dull. She described it was a void; a vast nothingness,” says Margie Warrell of Forbes. What better way to fill in an empty world than with the power of words and conversation?

Quit Limiting Yourself By Your Words

You might have found yourself saying things like “I could never do that,” or “That’s just impossible.” But, take a moment to think about such negative speech. What is it accomplishing for you? If these statements are commonplace in your day-to-day speech, you might be unknowingly ruining your chances of meeting the goal that you’re complaining about.

Too often, people indifferently place limitations on themselves by saying that they can’t accomplish something, or convincing themselves that they will never get something done. Hey, the world is what you make of it. This isn’t a new idea, and it might even sound cliché, but it’s the truth. If you keep a positive attitude about your workplace and your situation, then reality will bend to your will (well, sort of). Most of the time, your external world will reflect what you are thinking internally, so take advantage of this reality for your business.

Use Your Words to Rally the Team

With the power of your words, you can invoke loyalty in your company. Saying the right words at the right time can change almost any situation and show your followers that you can be counted on in the face of adversity. As a business owner, you are by default the leader, and your team will look to you for leadership in order to take the company in the direction that is best for everyone. Before you speak, stop, and think about the long-term ramifications regarding what you say next.

Choose Your Words Carefully

By applying basic neuroscience to your workplace, you can provide your workers with an environment which fosters greater self-awareness and reinforces positive thought. To get you started, here are three easy steps you can take to change things around with the words you use:

Use positive words and phrases instead of negative ones. For example, go with “I will” instead of “I won’t.”

Labeling things and people negatively will only reinforce the idea. For example, instead of saying that you are horrible at something, say that you haven’t yet learned enough about it. Be sure to commit to what you’re talking about, say “I will” instead of “I’ll try.”

By mastering these skills, you’ll be a more powerful leader that your team will rally behind, and you’ll have more confidence in yourself. But, more importantly, your newfound charisma will attract potential clients and unnerve your competitors. Do you think all of this sounds too good to be true? Remember, “Yes you can.”
